Kazakhstan Communications and Information Ministry’s website announced results of the public opinion poll on what books by foreign authors should be translated to Kazakh language, Minister Askar Zhumagaliyev wrote in his Twitter. “I am grateful to all those helping us choose the best book titles to be further translated into Kazakh language”, the Minister wrote. The list comprises 29 titles so far, with Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien; Harry Potter series J. K. Rowling; Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis; the Children of Captain Grant by Jules Verne; Mary Poppins by P. L. Travers being the most popular suggestions. The Minister launched the poll August 22. The language and many of traditions and customs of the Kazakh people have been forgotten throughout the past century when Kazakhstan was part of the USSR. Real sovereignty is just now being reestablished in Kazakhstan, and these abandoned traditions are being rediscovered by the Kazakh people. This year Kazakhstan is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its independence from the USSR.
