Tengrinews.kz – The first criminal cases for forced marriage have been registered in Kazakhstan, according to the General Prosecutor’s Office.
On September 16, a new article — 125-1 — was added to the Criminal Code, introducing liability for forcing someone into marriage, including cases where a woman is kidnapped or threatened with violence to compel her to marry.
Punishment includes a fine of up to 2,000 MCI, community service, restriction of freedom, or imprisonment for up to two years. If the act results in serious consequences, the sentence may range from five to ten years.
“The first criminal cases of forced marriage have already been registered in Shymkent and the Kyzylorda region. Notably, both victims are minors,” the Prosecutor’s Office reported.
In addition, a new article on stalking — persistent harassment — also took effect on the same date. Two criminal cases under this article have already been initiated in the Atyrau and Pavlodar regions.
