Kazakh inmate scams businessman out of 50 million tenge via phone call

Tengrinews.kz – A convict in Ust-Kamenogorsk has been sentenced for fraud, after managing to scam a businessman out of 50 million tenge while serving time in prison, reports the Anti-Corruption Service.

Tengrinews.kz – A convict in Ust-Kamenogorsk has been sentenced for fraud, after managing to scam a businessman out of 50 million tenge while serving time in prison, reports the Anti-Corruption Service.

Using an illegally obtained mobile phone, the inmate contacted prominent local entrepreneurs, pretending to be the deputy akim (governor) of the region, and offered assistance in addressing flood-related issues.

"The fraudster was found guilty of illegally obtaining 50 million tenge from a businessman under the pretense of offering business benefits and preferences. The court sentenced him to an additional 8 years of imprisonment, combining it with his prior sentence," the Anti-Corruption Service stated.
