It turns out that such an initiative is indeed part of the plans.
"For passengers’ convenience, the company intends to equip its trains with wireless internet. This will be achieved using equipment designed for multimedia services on trains. The system will be reconfigured to incorporate OneWeb satellite technology, providing high-speed internet via mobile satellite communication," the press service reported.
It was clarified that the pilot project will be launched on Talgo train No. 3/4, operating on the Astana–Almaty route.
"At the initial stage, we will test the technical feasibility of internet connectivity, including network stability and average speed throughout the journey. Additionally, we will assess the performance of the conductor’s mobile terminal, a POS terminal for cashless payments, the train supervisor’s body camera, and the onboard video surveillance system.
Based on the pilot project’s results, a decision will be made regarding the timeline and potential scale of implementing satellite internet on trains," the company stated.
No specific launch date has been announced yet.
It’s worth noting that in 2024, the national railway operator transported 13.6 million passengers, including 4.2 million during the summer season. The most popular routes include Astana–Almaty, Astana–Shymkent, Almaty–Shymkent, Astana–Semey, and Almaty–Semey.
Previously, JSC "Passenger Transportation" helped clarify which trains in Kazakhstan have "women-only carriages".
