Tengrinews.kz – The Ministry of Internal Affairs has warned Kazakhstanis about dangerous posts on the social network Threads, citing Polisia.kz.

According to the police, posts with offers to get acquainted such as “looking for a wife,” “looking for a husband,” “in search of a serious relationship” are appearing more and more often on social networks, including Threads. Behind such posts there may be both real users and fraudsters.

Law enforcement agencies note that scammers often create the image of attractive men or women, actively start messaging, and quickly build a trusting and emotional connection.

How the scheme works

According to the police, the fraud usually unfolds in stages. First, the victim is drawn into active messaging and an emotional attachment is formed. Then the interlocutor talks about an allegedly difficult life situation — illness, urgent expenses — or offers “profitable investments.”

After that comes a request to transfer money. Most often, the funds are asked to be sent to foreign accounts, crypto wallets, or via third parties. Once they receive the money, the scammers stop communicating or block the victim.

Signs of fraud

Law enforcement advises people to be on alert if an online acquaintance:

  • asks to transfer money;
  • avoids video calls and in-person meetings;
  • uses photos that may belong to other people.

Police recommendations

Citizens are advised not to send money or personal data to people they only know online, not to send their own photos, not to follow suspicious links, to carefully check the profiles of interlocutors, and to break off communication at the slightest suspicion.

The Cybercrime Counteraction Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs urges people to be especially cautious with online dating and to report any unlawful actions.
