According to the Embassy of India in Astana, the tragedy occurred on 6 January. The diplomatic mission reported that there were five Indian citizens in the car – four students of the South Kazakhstan Medical Academy in Shymkent and one tourist. They were traveling from Shymkent to Almaty.

“Two sadly lost their lives at the site, while 3 with serious injuries are under treatment in ICU,” the embassy said.

The Embassy of India expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased students of the South Kazakhstan Medical Academy, who were natives of the state of Rajasthan.
