Tengrinews.kz — On Thursday, July 23, Astana was hit by a torrential downpour: 11.4 millimeters of rain fell in just 22 minutes, citing the press service of the capital's akimat.
Total precipitation for the day reached 18.2 millimeters, approximately one-third of the monthly average. City utility services are currently operating in high-alert mode.
The previous day, July 22, Astana saw 20.8 millimeters of rainfall. Consequently, the capital received 39 millimeters of rain over two days, accounting for nearly 70 percent of the monthly norm.
The 11.4 millimeters of precipitation recorded in just 20 minutes translates to 11.4 liters of water per square meter. One millimeter of rainfall is equivalent to 1 liter per square meter.
The heavy rainfall led to localized flooding in several areas of the city.
"The aftermath of the severe weather was promptly addressed," the akimat reported.
Furthermore, utility services are continuously working on cleaning collectors and storm drains, steaming pipes, and constructing storm sewerage systems and treatment facilities.
As a reminder, on Thursday afternoon, Astana was lashed by a heavy downpour accompanied by hurricane-force winds and localized hail. Many streets were submerged, power outages were reported in several districts, and the high winds toppled fences and trees.
