Tengrinews.kz - A resident of Aktau, Mangystau region, was unable to obtain a Kazakhstani passport for her daughter after migration officials claimed she was a citizen of Georgia, and all her documents were obtained illegally.

Twenty-four-year-old Mziya Tskhadadze moved to Kazakhstan at the age of three with her mother. She spent her childhood in Aktau, where she received her identity card, high school diploma, driver’s license, degree, and passport. After getting married, she registered her marriage certificate and later her daughter’s birth certificate. For over 20 years, she traveled abroad without issues and actively participated in her region’s public life as a member of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan.

"This summer, my family decided to go on vacation abroad. I submitted the documents to obtain a passport for my daughter, and that’s when I learned that I am apparently a citizen of Georgia, from where I moved as a child. The question arises, how did I then receive all my Kazakh documents, including my ID and passport? I even have my own business and pay taxes. They told me they were obtained illegally. How? Did I print them myself?" Mziya told Tengrinews.kz.

She recorded a video message explaining her situation. Mziya Tskhadadze speaks Kazakh fluently and is perplexed as to why her documents suddenly became invalid.

The situation was commented on by the press service of the Mangystau region police department. They stated that an error in Mziya Tskhadadze's citizenship status was made by migration officials back in 2015. At the time of her documentation, Mziya was not a citizen of Kazakhstan.

"In 2014, Kazakh citizenship was acquired only by Mziya's mother, Manana Tskhadadze; her father is a citizen of Georgia. Currently, Mziya Tskhadadze needs to provide a certificate from the Georgian embassy regarding her citizenship status. Subsequently, she can apply for Kazakh citizenship through a simplified process since her husband is a citizen of Kazakhstan," the Mangystau region police department stated.

The department added that they would provide the applicant with all necessary informational and advisory assistance and help her request a certificate from the Georgian embassy. Mziya noted that their family vacation plans for this year have been ruined.

Earlier, a resident of Taraz had been unable to prove he was a citizen of Kazakhstan for three years. In September 2019, the man was denied re-registration and replacement of his identity card by the government services center due to supposedly acquiring Russian citizenship. To prove otherwise, he had to contact the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which found no record of him in their citizen lists. Subsequently, the man went to court and was awarded compensation for moral damages in the amount of 300,000 tenge from the police department.
