Human organ trafficking uncovered in Kazakhstan

Tengrinews.kz - 15 criminal cases have been registered in Kazakhstan concerning human organ trafficking. This was reported at a briefing by Shynar Kosherbaeva, Deputy Head of the third division of the department for combating organized crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

According to Kosherbaeva, up to 150 criminal cases related to human trafficking are initiated annually in the republic. Since the beginning of the year, 134 criminal cases have been registered.

"Among them: 15 cases for organ trafficking, 2 cases for abduction with intent to exploit, 3 cases for unlawful deprivation of liberty for exploitation, 15 cases for human trafficking, 12 cases for involving minors in prostitution, 3 cases for trafficking minors, 7 cases for involvement in prostitution, and 77 cases for operating brothels and pimping," said the police officer.

She added that in recent years, law enforcement agencies have shut down several channels for smuggling Kazakhstani citizens abroad. One of the most recent cases involved the smuggling of Kazakhstani individuals to Bahrain.

Administrative offenses that facilitate human trafficking crimes are also being identified. For example, 649 administrative offenses related to providing premises for prostitution and procuring have been registered. Fines totaling 155 million tenge have been imposed.

It is noted that in Kazakhstan, human trafficking is punishable by imprisonment for a term of 4 to 15 years. Trafficking in organs is also punishable by imprisonment.

Recall that on September 5, a new law "On Combating Human Trafficking" came into force in Kazakhstan. This law introduces a new category of crimes related to human trafficking into the Criminal Code and also establishes a new concept: "other sexual services."
