Tengrinews.kz - First Deputy Minister of Healthcare Timur Sultangaziyev has revealed how many people in Kazakhstan have been officially diagnosed with gambling addiction, also known as "ludomania".
Speaking at a Senate briefing, Sultangaziyev said that the diagnostic and treatment protocol for ludomania was introduced about a year ago.
"Since then, 15 cases have been officially diagnosed as ludomania," he said.
He noted that the number is relatively low compared to the thousands of people involved in gambling and betting across the country. One reason, he explained, is that individuals suffering from gambling addiction often do not recognize it as a medical condition.
"Previously, anyone diagnosed with gambling addiction was placed under dynamic observation at a mental health center, and this would be recorded in their medical history. Naturally, many people did not want such a record.
Because of this, a new law on ludomania was passed last year, which introduced a consultative observation mechanism. Now people can visit a clinic, speak to a psychiatrist, and receive treatment if needed — all without it appearing in their official medical documents," Sultangaziyev said.
