Tengrinews.kz - Vice-Minister of Trade and Integration Kairat Torebayev discussed the export potential of Kazakh wheat.

According to the ministry's representative, with rising global demand and decreasing harvests in several countries, Kazakhstan sees opportunities in the European Union markets, such as Italy, Latvia, Spain, and others. Key issues include the transit of Kazakh wheat through Russia and reducing transportation costs for exporters.

"There is export potential of nearly one million tons of wheat to Turkey and Middle Eastern countries. It is important to restore shipments to Iran, and we are already seeing progress in barley exports. Issues of trade financing and logistics will be addressed. We will also focus on promoting the Kazakh wheat brand in new markets, such as Pakistan, Indonesia, Brazil, and Malaysia, where import demand is expected to grow," Torebayev said at a government meeting.

He added that Kazakhstan will continue supplying wheat to Central Asian countries and Afghanistan, with an expected volume of about 4.2 million tons.

"Overall, grain exports to China reached over 1.4 million tons in 2023, showing a 5.5-fold increase year-on-year. Wheat exports to China have significantly risen, reaching 538.8 thousand tons in 2023, almost 15 times higher than the previous year. This demonstrates the potential to increase wheat exports to China and other Asian countries to 1.6 million tons," the vice-minister said.

Torebayev also noted that it is crucial to resolve issues related to border delays due to Chinese regulations, as well as complications such as licenses and quotas for importing Kazakh grain into China.

Earlier, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was updated on the agricultural sector's development over the first nine months of 2024, as the country achieved a record harvest.
