According to operative data from the Kazakhstan Data Center, the earthquake took place on 5 January at 10:15 AM on the border of Zhambyl and Almaty regions. The epicenter of the tremors was located 30 kilometers north of the village of Otar. The magnitude of the earthquake was 3.7.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the magnitude of the earthquake was 4.2. The epicenter was located 88 kilometers northeast of Korday.
