Tengrinews.kz – The epicenter of the earthquake felt in Almaty was located 74 kilometers east of the city within Kazakhstan's territory, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES).
The department informed that the seismic stations registered the earthquake at 15:11 Astana time.
"The epicenter of the earthquake is located 74 kilometers east of Almaty. The data is being processed. No information on casualties or damage has been reported," the ministry said.
The ministry also reminded citizens about the 10 basic steps to follow during an earthquake:
- Stay calm and do not panic.
- Do not use elevators or stairs during tremors.
- Move away from furniture, windows, and chandeliers.
- Find a safe, sturdy shelter: if you're on higher floors, stay in a corner of load-bearing walls.
- Leave the building (in multi-story buildings, after the shaking stops).
- Turn off water, gas, and electricity.
- Take your emergency kit (prepared in advance).
- Stay away from power lines, buildings, and trees.
- Be prepared for aftershocks.
- Help the elderly and people with disabilities.
Today, an earthquake was felt in Almaty. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake occurred on February 17 at 15:08 Astana time. The epicenter was located 74 kilometers northeast of Almaty and 17 kilometers east of the village of Turgen. The magnitude of the tremors was 4.8.
