Tengrinews.kz – Dozens of stray dogs have been found dead on the streets of Kostanay in recent days, with volunteers alleging that the animals were poisoned.

The bodies of the deceased dogs were discovered in two areas of the city: the Yubileiny district and Pushkin Street. Volunteers from the organization "Nadezhda Plus KST" shared photos and videos of dying dogs to raise awareness.

Alexandra Lebedinskaya, head of the organization, described the harrowing scenes, stating that the poisoned dogs suffered seizures before dying.

“We have footage of a dying dog on Pushkin Street. In Yubileiny, two bodies were found—one in a field and one near residential buildings. After poisoning incidents at our shelter, the killings haven’t stopped. Around 40 animals have died, all showing the same signs of poisoning,” Lebedinskaya said.

Out of respect for ethical concerns, the videos of the suffering animals will not be shared.

The volunteers attempted to file a police report but were unsuccessful. According to Lebedinskaya, law enforcement has refused to accept complaints after a previous incident involving a dog named Bob on Kurganskaya Street. However, the group has tagged the regional police department in their social media posts, urging an investigation into the matter.

Tengrinews.kz has reached out to the regional police department for comment.

Volunteers warned that pets could also fall victim to the poisoning. They urged pet owners to only walk their dogs with muzzles and ensure they do not eat anything from the ground.

Earlier, residents in Oral reported stray dogs being killed with poisoned darts. For a week, the city has seen stray dogs’ bodies scattered around, alarming citizens. Poisonous darts left at the scene also pose a danger to the public.

An investigation into these incidents is being requested by local animal rights activists.
