Clothing instead of granite: Large contraband shipment seized in Kazakhstan

Tengrinews.kz - Authorities in Astana have seized a shipment of contraband worth 35 million tenge, according to the Main Transport Prosecutor's Office.
Officials discovered a freight wagon with falsified customs documents at a customs checkpoint. While the documents indicated the wagon contained granite, a significant load of clothing from China was found instead.
"Following a claim by the Akmola Transport Prosecutor's Office, more than 30 tons of goods worth 35 million tenge were confiscated for state revenue and donated to children’s institutions for social support," the statement read.
Another case of smuggling was uncovered in Almaty. At the airport’s temporary storage facility, film production equipment shipped from Delhi in 2018 had remained unprocessed for over six years.
"The seven tons of equipment, valued at over 2 million tenge, were left without customs clearance. Following a court ruling initiated by the prosecutor's office, the goods were declared ownerless and transferred to the Ministry of Culture," the statement added.
Previously, transport prosecutors of Almaty stopped the smuggling of goods worth over 100 million tenge.
