Tengrinews.kz – The Department of Emergency Situations (DES) of Almaty has announced that the city is currently at fire hazard class 5, the highest level.
According to DES data, since the beginning of this year, over 300 dry grass fires have been recorded in the city. Despite plowing and mowing efforts, some of these fires escalated into mountain wildfires, creating a risk of flames spreading to residential areas.
“According to the storm warning, Almaty will experience extreme heat of 35–39 degrees Celsius until July 28. In the city’s suburbs, a class 5 extreme fire hazard has been declared. Under such conditions, even a small spark can trigger a large-scale fire,” the statement said.
To reduce fire risks, dry grass is being cut, and 104 kilometers of areas have been cleared of dry vegetation in cooperation with the city administration.
“Residents and visitors are urged not to light campfires, smoke, or burn grass near dry vegetation. In the event of consequences, those responsible may face criminal liability,” the DES added.
The agency also warned Almaty residents against:
- Overloading electrical networks or plugging several powerful devices into one outlet;
- Leaving children inside closed vehicles;
- Staying outdoors for prolonged periods to avoid overheating and heatstroke.
