Tengrinews.kz – The court has granted amnesty to Bakhytzhan Baizhanov, the brother of Kuandyk Bishimbayev convicted in the case of Saltanat Nukenova’s murder. The decision has officially entered into force.
The Akmola Regional Court press service confirmed the information.
"Under the law 'On Amnesty in connection with the 30th anniversary of the Constitution', Baizhanov’s unserved sentence was reduced by one-third. The final term of imprisonment has been set at 1 year, 4 months and 17 days," the court statement read.
On July 9, Baizhanov petitioned the Stepnogorsk District Court to reduce his sentence, and by the end of the month the court granted his request.
In June, Tengrinews.kz spoke with Baizhanov’s lawyer, Gaziz Yntykbayev, who said his client is serving his term in a medium-security facility in Stepnogorsk. His brother, former minister Kuandyk Bishimbayev, is held in the same city in maximum-security facility No. 5.
According to the lawyer, from summer 2025 Baizhanov will also have the right to apply for early parole. While he qualifies for the announced amnesty, he will not be fully exempt from criminal liability.
On June 23, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced an amnesty in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Constitution. It is expected to cover more than 15,000 convicts across Kazakhstan.
