Tengrinews.kz - The State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance has revealed how much the so-called “Google tax” has contributed to Kazakhstan's budget over the past three years.
According to the committee, foreign companies have paid over 58 billion tenge into Kazakhstan’s budget in three years. In 2022, total payments amounted to 10 billion tenge, while in 2023, the figure reached 24 billion tenge. In just the first nine months of this year, 23 billion tenge in taxes have already been collected.
The largest contributor is iHerb, a health product marketplace, which paid 11 billion tenge. Apple follows with over 9 billion tenge, while Google has paid 9.3 billion tenge over three years.
The committee expects revenues to continue growing and is proposing measures to ensure compliance.
“A new bill is under review. It targets taxpayers who fail to comply with tax legislation. Internet access will be restricted, meaning our citizens will not be able to visit the websites of those taxpayers who do not pay their taxes,” said Talgat Adilov, Head of the Digital Asset Administration at the State Revenue Committee, in an interview with Jibek Joly TV channel.
Since early 2022, foreign companies providing online services and marketplaces selling goods to individuals in Kazakhstan have been required to pay VAT under the “Google tax.”
Previously, the State Revenue Committee has announced the launch of a pilot project called "Digital VAT."
