Tengrinews.kz - On the morning of October 17, Almaty residents received a presidential alert for emergencies called Mass Alert.
Earlier, it was announced that the Mass Alert emergency notification system would be tested on October 17 in Almaty. The project to launch the Mass Alert system for immediate emergency notifications is being implemented at the direction of the Head of State. Notifications will appear with the titles "National Alert" (for iPhone users) or "Presidential Alert" (for Android users) because, according to international specifications, all phone manufacturers use these titles at the operating system level of their mobile devices when government agencies issue test or emergency alerts.
On October 17 at 10:00 a.m., residents of Almaty received a test alert on their mobile devices in the form of a pop-up window with messages in Kazakh, Russian, and English: "Алаңдамаңыздар. Халықты хабардар ету жүйесіне тексеру жүргізілуде", "Не беспокойтесь. Проводится проверка системы оповещения населения", and "Remain calm. The public alert system is being tested."
It is worth noting that iPhone users will receive Mass Alert notifications only with devices running iOS 18. For this, residents and guests of Almaty needed to update their devices to iOS 18.
The akimat (the local government administration) of Almaty stated that the Mass Alert system has several advantages over SMS. Alerts reach users across the entire mobile network coverage area as well as in specifically selected geographical zones. Furthermore, the system operates effectively under network overload conditions. The main advantage of the Cell Broadcast technology is the instant and mass notification of all subscribers within the coverage area.
