Tengrinews.kz – Environmental improvement is expected in Almaty: heavy precipitation and stronger winds will help disperse smog and reduce the concentration of harmful substances in the atmosphere, according to Almaty.tv.
Precipitation works as a natural filter
According to experts, air quality has already begun to improve since early December. Rain and wet snow effectively clean the atmosphere by “washing” harmful particles down to the ground.
Environmental specialists note that after intense precipitation, pollution levels can drop by up to 80 percent within just a few hours, with PM2.5 levels decreasing especially noticeably.
Raidyn Kasymov, director of the training center at the Association of the Kazakhstan Chamber of Environmental Auditors, noted that the lack of wind and low precipitation this year have worsened the ecological situation: “This has significantly complicated the environmental situation for us and greatly deteriorated the quality of atmospheric air.”
Changing weather in Almaty and improving air quality
Meteorologists report that in the coming days the city will experience variable weather with regular rain and wet snow. Temperatures will range from slight negatives at night to above-zero values during the day.
Wind gusts and passing cyclones are creating favorable conditions for the dispersion of pollutants. On December 9, precipitation will continue, and on December 10, strong northwesterly winds will again help clear the air.
“During the week of December 8–14, at the beginning of the period, behind the northwestern cyclone covering most of the country, precipitation is expected — mainly snow, blizzard, icy conditions, and stronger winds. By the end of the period, with another northwestern cyclone, precipitation in the form of rain and snow, icy conditions, blowing snow, stronger winds, and a gradual temperature increase are forecast,” said Kazhydromet spokesperson Aruzhan Muratova.
It is noted that no adverse meteorological conditions are expected across Kazakhstan on December 9.

December 9 — Cloudy, occasional precipitation (rain, snow), fog. Northwesterly wind 3–8 m/s. Air temperature: –0 to –2°C at night, 0 to +2°C during the day.
December 10 — Cloudy, snow, icy conditions, at times heavy snowfall at night. Northwesterly wind 5–10 m/s. Air temperature at night and during the day: –10 to –12°C.
December 11 — Partly cloudy, snowfall at night. Roads will be icy. Northeasterly wind 3–8 m/s. Air temperature: –15 to –17°C at night, –7 to –9°C during the day.
