Almaty hit by record rainfall - when will the rain stop

Tengrinews.kz – Half of the monthly precipitation norm fell in Almaty in one day. Due to prolonged rains, utility services have been switched to an enhanced operating mode.

According to the akimat, from 11:00 a.m. on May 10 to 8:00 p.m. on May 11, Almaty received 50.4 millimeters of precipitation. This amounts to 51 percent of the monthly norm for May, which is 99 millimeters.

City services continue working to prevent and eliminate local flooding. Employees of the Almaty Rescue Service are on additional duty.

According to the city’s Department of Emergency Situations, 53 units of special equipment and 240 employees have been involved in the work.

In total, over the past day, 3,080 road workers and 1,225 units of special equipment were mobilized to ensure the uninterrupted operation of urban infrastructure.

Some 2,300 sandbags have been prepared for rapid response.
