Tengrinews.kz – One nuclear power plant is not enough for Kazakhstan — the country must begin planning the construction of a second and even a third. This was stated by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during his Address to the Nation.

The President emphasized that for Kazakhstan, the energy transition is not an end in itself, but rather a tool for sustainable development, based on the real capabilities of the energy system and the country’s long-term national interests.

“The development of nuclear energy is a strategic priority. A month ago, construction began in Almaty Region on Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant, in cooperation with Rosatom. However, that alone is likely not enough for stable economic growth. We must begin planning now for the second and even third nuclear power plants,” said Tokayev.

He added that during a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, an agreement was reached on strategic partnership between the two countries in this sector.

“Kazakhstan is open to cooperating with all global companies on a mutually beneficial basis, which aligns with our goal of achieving energy sovereignty,” Tokayev stated.
