Tengrinews.kz - Maxillofacial surgeons in the Almaty region performed a unique operation.

A 44-year-old patient was admitted to the Almaty multidisciplinary clinical hospital with serious facial fractures. He complained of pain in the forehead area, dizziness, and severe headaches. According to the patient, he "fell and hit his head on a blunt object."

"CT scan shows a depressed fracture of the anterior and posterior walls of the left frontal sinus, a fracture of the orbital wall and zygomatic region on the left, as well as fractures of other facial bones and the skull. During the examination, swelling and a hematoma in the forehead area were also observed," said Marat Iskakov, head of the maxillofacial surgery department.

In such injuries, it is crucial to accurately align and stabilize the bone fragments, specialists emphasize. The doctors held an emergency consultation and decided to perform a "total osteosynthesis of the facial skeleton" using titanium mini-plates and screws.

"This is necessary for proper and quick bone healing. Therefore, we decided to carry out a complex operation—facial osteosynthesis. This surgical procedure involves aligning and fixing bone fragments in cases of severe injuries and deformities. Metal constructs are most commonly used for this purpose, and we used plates and screws. After the procedure, the bones heal faster while maintaining an anatomically correct shape," added Marat Iskakov.

The operation was successful, and the patient was discharged on the seventh day, in satisfactory condition and without any complaints.

Earlier, a malignant tumour weighing six kilograms was removed by doctors of Zhambyl Regional Multidisciplinary Centre of Oncology and Surgery. The complex operation lasted 5 hours. The size of the tumour reached 35 centimeters and it had spread to 90 per cent of the liver.
