Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev received Akhmetzhan Yessimov, mayor of Almaty, the biggest city of Kazakhstan, in his Almaty residence the President’s web site reports.

“Mr. Yessimov reported on the city development. Following the talks, President set a number of tasks”, the statement reads.

President also took a train ride in the Almaty underground from Abai station to Zhibek Zholy. “Almaty is the cradle of Kazakhstan’s independence. This is where the history of sovereign Kazakhstan is rooted. The nation is looking forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of its independence. Kazakhstan has seen revived economic growth. We see Kazakhstan growing”, the President said after the underground test-ride.

Railing of the first stretch of the Almaty underground was completed early June. Afterwards, carriage rolling stock has been tested in between four stations – Raimbek, Zhibek Zholy, Almaly and Abai. The first stretch is to be inaugurated in December before celebrating the 20 anniversary of the nation’s independence.

“I believe the launch of the first stretch could be a good present for people for the Independence Day”, President had said when visiting Raimbek station still under construction. The first 8.56-km-long line comprises 7 stations.
