The editorial board of Tengrinews.kz contacted the Astana akimat (local government administration) and the Ministry of Trade and Integration for comments.
As reported by the capital's Department for Investment and Entrepreneurship Development, there is no shortage of potatoes in the city. The products are presented in sufficient quantities on the shelves of retail chains and markets in the city, and their stocks are replenished in a timely manner.
"In order to prevent wholesale purchases of products by resellers for further sale by local stores, a temporary restriction on the sale of potatoes has been introduced in the outlets of the Small and Spar chains - no more than 5 kilograms per person," the department responded.
The Ministry of Trade also confirmed that there is no shortage of potatoes in the capital, as well as in Kazakhstan as a whole.
Potatoes have become more expensive in Kazakhstan: What is happening?
In January, the price of one of the most popular goods, potatoes, jumped in the regions of the country.
In Aktobe, at the beginning of January, a kilogram cost no more than 200 tenge. Over the past week, the price has doubled. At the same time, the product is far from marketable: many tubers are spoiled.
In the Zhetysu region, which is considered a potato region, the price of this product has exceeded 400 tenge. But its quality is much better than the potatoes that are on the shelves in Aktobe.
In Pavlodar, a kilogram of home-grown potatoes is sold at the market for 400 tenge. In local shops, second-grade bread is sold for 320 tenge per kilogram. In the suburbs of Pavlodar, potatoes cost 350 tenge.
In Kyzylorda, Pavlodar potatoes are sold for 360 tenge per kilogram. In social stores, the local product costs 135 tenge. In the East Kazakhstan region, the price per kilogram of potatoes reaches 446 tenge.
The most expensive potatoes are sold in Astana. A kilogram of selected potatoes in stores is sold for 455 tenge. In some retail outlets, the product is not on the shelves or they sell leftovers.
