Tengrinews.kz - Deputy Head of Germany's Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), Sinan Selen, has accused Telegram of insufficient cooperation, сiting Deutsche Welle.
Selen expressed this stance on Wednesday, August 28, in Berlin. He mentioned that various groups, which are under the BfV’s scrutiny, communicate on Pavel Durov's platform. However, when it comes to combating Islamist terrorism or right-wing extremism, Telegram does not provide the same level of information exchange as other platforms, Selen claims.
"We also ask Telegram questions... the responses are limited," he said.
He added that while some platforms quickly and reliably provide information in response to "legally permissible" requests, Telegram does not fall into that category.
Earlier, an investigation into Telegram was launched in South Korea.
Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov, was recently detained as part of a judicial investigation regarding his refusal to "provide information necessary for legally authorized interception," as well as for complicity in offenses and crimes organized on the platform (including drug trafficking, child pornography, fraud, and money laundering by organized gangs).
On Wednesday, August 28, Durov was brought to court to be formally charged. The French prosecution, under the decision of the investigating judge, released Durov from custody for questioning and to present charges, though his detention status may change as the investigation progresses.
It was also reported earlier that Pavel Durov is facing criminal charges in Switzerland.
The UAE has demanded an explanation from France regarding Durov’s arrest.
