Tengrinews.kz - Chairman of the Atomic Energy Agency Almassadam Satkaliyev spoke about the details of the construction of the second nuclear power plant (NPP). According to him, a decision has already been made to locate the facility in the Balkhash area, and its working name has also been determined.
As Satkaliyev reported, three promising sites in the Balkhash area are currently under consideration.
“Regarding the second station, there is already a decision. The second station will also be located in Balkhash. Three promising sites are currently being studied. Based on the results of the review, we will certainly announce the exact location,” the head of the agency said today on the sidelines of Akorda.
He clarified that the project already has a working name — NPP “Moyynkum”, chosen taking into account the proposed location of the station. It is expected that the new NPP will consist of two power units with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts each.
Also, according to the head of the agency, negotiations are underway with potential partners on selecting a technology supplier. He recalled that the Chinese company China National Nuclear Corporation is being considered as a priority partner.
Recall: last autumn, Kazakhstan decided on the name for the first NPP. Following the final meeting of the competition commission, the name “Balkhash Nuclear Power Plant” was recognized as the winner, having received the largest number of proposals from citizens.
Earlier it was reported that by 2050 Kazakhstan plans to commission at least three nuclear power plants (NPPs). At the same time, the implementation of a project for the construction of a fourth station is planned.
Context
In March 2025, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during a meeting of the National Kurultai, stated that it is strategically important for Kazakhstan to build not one, but three NPPs. The Head of State emphasized that it is strategically important for Kazakhstan to create a new energy industry that will provide a solid foundation for dynamic economic development for decades ahead.
In July 2025, First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar reported that the second and third NPPs in Kazakhstan will be built by the Chinese side.
