Kazakhstan is planning to implement an equivalent of Russian system of emergency response to road accidents ERA-GLONASS by 2015, Tengrinews.kz reports citing the press-service of Russian government. According to the press-service, on February 27 Vice-PM of Russia Vladislav Surkov and Kazakhstan Vice-PM Kairat Kelimbetov discussed cooperation in creation of a system based on GLONASS satellite system in Kazakhstan. The meeting was also participated by representatives of Russian Transport Ministry, non-commercial partnership Support to Development and Use of Navigation Technologies and KazakhTelecom. According to Surkov, GLONASS technologies are in demand in the world. According to him, the Russian Ministry of Communications achieved several agreements with major foreign producers of chip sets at the international mobile congress in Barcelona. The producers confirmed their readiness to supply GLONASS-compatative devices. ERA-GLONASS is a project for rendering emergency aide in case of road accidents. The Russian system of emergency respond is called to shorten the time of arrival of ambulances and rescuers to the accident site by 30 percent. The system requires a round-based ERA-GLONASS navigation information infrastructure to serve all the roads in the country and vehicles to be equipped with GLONASS/GPS navigation communication terminals. In case of a traffic accident, the terminal will automatically collect data on its exact location, time, and severity, and transmit it with a high-priority alert to an ERA-GLONASS operator. Once verified, this information is passed on to the emergency response services. Vehicle driver and passengers can also contact an ERA-GLONASS operator manually – by pressing a special button.
