Kazakhstani and Russian officials have endorsed an agreement on joint construction of a nuclear power plant, Tengrinews reports from Atyrau.

A number of agreements and memorandums were signed during the XI Russia-Kazakhstan Interregional Cooperation Forum by Akimats (Municipal authorities) and administrations of near-boarder regions. The agreement between Kazakhstan and Russia on cooperative construction and exploitation of a nuclear power plant was endorsed by the Kazakh Minister of Energy Vladimir Shkolnik and the head of the Rosatom Sergey Kirienko from Russia.

The Minister of Enegry told Tengrinews that location of the new nuclear power plant had not been selected. “The location is yet unclear. The area near Kurchatov town is under consideration, but the decision will be made after a study is conducted,” Shkolnik said.

It was earlier reported that the final decision on the location will be made on September 30. Three locations – Kurchatov, Balkhash and Aktau – had been shortlisted as the most probable construction sites for the nuclear power plant. The construction is expected to start in 2018.
