Astana will be able to partially switch to solar energy in future, Tengrinews.kz reports from Smart Astana-2011 conference. The Smart City concept was presented on November 23. It involves installation of solar concentrators in the city. Experts say that the concentrators are more effective than normal solar batteries. “If compared to solar batteries concentrators have an advantage, because solar batteries efficiency is 20 percent, while the concentrators' is40 percent or more. They work on day light and will be able to provide lighting of the city and buildings. The economy will make 80 percent. The main advantage is that they generate not only electricity, but also heat. No other devices can do that,” Director of the company implementing the solar concentrators project Askar Abdiyev told Tengrinews.kz. According to him, technical design specifications of this project are currently being prepared. Smart Astana project would help the city switch to innovative technologies. It includes three stages. The concept of the Smart City itself was developed in line with Kazakhstan's strategic development until 2020. Speaking at the conference, Akim (Major) of Astana Imangali Tasmagambetov said that Smart Astana pilot projects will be launched by the end of this year and will involve implementation of innovations in healthcare and education, i.e. there are no plans for solar concentrators yet. Creation of the Smart City will complete at least in 20 years, Akim said.
