Tengrinews.kz – Kazakhstan has officially chosen a name for the country’s first nuclear power plant, the Agency for Atomic Energy announced.
According to the agency, the nationwide contest for the best name has concluded, with “Balkhash Nuclear Power Plant” selected as the winning entry. The name received the highest number of public submissions. Officials noted that choosing a geographically based name aligns with international naming practices for nuclear power plants.
A total of 27,157 Kazakh citizens aged 16 and older took part in the contest, each allowed to submit one proposal. From all entries, 10,460 unique name variants were identified, including submissions in Cyrillic, Latin script, and synonyms.
During the final session, the commission reviewed the 100 most popular options. The name “Балқаш атом электр станциясы” (Balkhash Nuclear Power Plant) was proposed by 882 participants, placing it first in the popularity ranking and securing its victory.
The commission also approved the official names in Russian and English:
- Атомная электростанция “Балхаш”
- Balkhash Nuclear Power Plant
All 882 participants who suggested the winning name will receive author certificates through eGov Mobile.
The Agency for Atomic Energy has also created a unified database of all submitted proposals to potentially use for naming future nuclear facilities. The list includes creative alternatives such as Bolashaq, Jaryq, Quat, Ulken, Moiynqum, Uly Dala, Turan, Alash, Tumar, Jetisu, as well as names referencing prominent historical figures like Satpayev, Abai, Kenesary, and Chokin.
The naming contest was announced in early August at the initiative of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. A special commission was established in September to oversee the process, and the competition officially concluded in early October.
