The ten thousandth child has been born via in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in Kazakhstan, Tengrinews reports.

On March 21, the Sarbalin family welcomed twins, a baby boy and a baby girl. One of the children became the ten thousandth child to be born thanks to IVF in Kazakhstan. Baby Zhalgas and his little sister Zhanerke were born healthy and strong, weighting 3.18 kg and 2.68 kg respectively.

The Sarbalin couple underwent IVF procedure as a part of the free medical care quota funded by the Kazakh government after one and a half year wait. The IVF was performed at the IVF Institute of Reproductive Medicine by Dr. Zhanar Tabagarova.

“It has been 20 years since the day we opened the IVF laboratory in Kazakhstan. This important date is marked by the birth of the ten thousandth child. (…) The birth of twins is not a coincidence. Families that wait for a child for a long time usually ask for twins. They were successful and babies were born healthy. As for triplets, we do not IVF for triplets because it complicates the pregnancy,” the head of the Institute Tamara Dzhusubalieva said.

According to the statistics provided by the Ministry of Healthcare of Kazakhstan, 15-18% of families in the country face infertility or other problems connected with giving birth to children. In 2015, the Ministry allocated $2.6 million for 750 families in need of an IVF procedure. 18 IVF clinics have been opened in Kazakhstan so far.
