Filtered coffee, prepared by passing ground beans through a paper or mesh filter, reduces the risk of arterial disease, which is the most common cause of heart attacks.
This is the conclusion reached by Norwegian researchers who observed the lives of 500 thousand people for 20 years. Scientists have found that drinking four cups of filtered coffee a day has a positive effect on heart health.
As for espresso, coffee based on it, including cappuccino, latte and flat white, turned out to be good for the brain. As shown by a study by Italian scientists conducted in 2023, espresso extracts can reduce the accumulation of toxic proteins associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease. Caffeine also reduces the accumulation of amyloids, reduces inflammation and prevents the death of brain cells, which can potentially reduce the risk of dementia.
However, experts note that the effect of coffee on reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease has only been proven in mice, not in humans.
Meanwhile, as scientists have found out, excessive consumption of instant coffee can be harmful due to the high content of acrylamide, a chemical recognized by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a dangerous carcinogen. Instant coffee contains twice as much acrylamide as ground coffee, but with moderate consumption (up to 10 cups a day), the risks are minimal, experts noted.
Despite the presence of acrylamide in instant coffee, this drink is rich in antioxidants, such as melanoidins, which promote the diversity of bacteria in the intestines and protect the body from various diseases.
