Tengrinews.kz - The Ministry of Healthcare has provided updates on the anthrax situation in the country.
As of early 2024, there have been 12 confirmed cases of anthrax across the republic, including one case in the Zhambyl region, one in Almaty (from a resident of the Almaty region), and ten cases in Almaty region.
"This year, there have been no reported fatalities related to anthrax. In 2023, there were 37 confirmed cases, including one fatal case," the ministry stated in response to a request.
Anthrax is an acute and highly dangerous infectious disease that affects both humans and animals. The primary sources of infection are domestic animals, including cattle, sheep, goats, camels, pigs, and horses. Anthrax is not typically transmitted from person to person; infection usually occurs through damaged skin and, less frequently, through mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract. It can manifest in cutaneous, intestinal, pulmonary, and septic forms, with cutaneous forms generally having a favorable prognosis, while other forms can often be fatal.
The last reported fatality from anthrax occurred on October 26, 2023, in the Karaganda region.
Earlier, sixteen individuals were hospitalized with suspected anthrax in the Almaty region, and quarantine measures were implemented in the village of Ulken Aksu due to the outbreak.
