Scented candles have long been a symbol of comfort, but their safety is questioned by experts. Yvonne Burkart, a toxicologist and creator of a popular YouTube channel, shared her opinion on the potential risks associated with using such candles in a conversation with English entrepreneur and podcaster Steven Bartlett.

According to her, most candles - conventional candles, paraffin wax, scented candles that we see in stores - should not be lit.
“They contain undisclosed fragrance. And within fragrance, there can be endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, and allergens. So when you light these candles, you're getting all of these toxins into your air. Some of the dyes that are used to color candles are carcinogenic, and nobody has any idea is if you burn them,” she said.
According to the toxicologist, the fragrances and dyes contained in candles are especially dangerous. Most often, Dr. Burkart notes, they are carcinogenic, and their impact on health when burned has not been fully studied.
