Tengrinews.kz - Researchers from the First People's Hospital of Shunde in China have found that skipping breakfast can increase the risk of dementia in older adults. The findings were published on the Science Direct portal, according to Gazeta.ru.

The study involved 859 participants over the age of 60. Volunteers provided data on their health and eating habits throughout the day. After three years of monitoring, the scientists discovered that those who frequently skipped breakfast showed a decline in memory and attention over time.

Additionally, in individuals who skipped breakfast, there were more pronounced biomarkers of neurodegeneration in the brain. Brain shrinkage was also observed.

According to the researchers, eating breakfast is not just a habit but a crucial factor for health. Glucose, which is introduced into the body with the first meal of the day, serves as the brain's primary source of energy. A deficiency in glucose leads to increased stress, which in turn raises cortisol levels and causes fat accumulation. This can accelerate cognitive aging.

Earlier, scientists from the Washington University School of Medicine uncovered how coffee affects gut bacteria.
