Dance battle Juste Debout Kazakhstan The Juste Debout is an international meeting of hip hop dances which gathers more than 3 000 dancers, selected after an international two months tour. 6 big disciplines are represented to it: Locking, Popping, Hip Hop New Style, House, Experimental and Top Rock. Kazakhstan will now be represented at the Juste Debout in Paris, France on March 2, 2014. This year a pre-selection of Juste Debout was held in Kazakhstan for the first time. The event took place in Almaty on January 18, 2014.

Best moments of Sonangol Africa Eco Race-2014 Two Kazakhstan crews – Kanat Shagirov/Alexandr Moroz and Yuriy Sazanov/Arslan Sakhimov – successfully completed the Sonagol Africa Eco Race-2014 that started on December 29, 2013 in St. Cyprien, France and finished on January 11, 2014 in Dakar, Senegal at the Lac Rosa (Rose Lake). The international marathon rally Sonangol Africa Eco Race 2014 was held on the territory of three states Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal. 11 stages of the race made a 5,580-kilometer route, contained the total of 2,997 kilometers of special sections.

Detroit Auto Show 2014 The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), one of the largest auto shows in North America, has been opened in Detroit with a renewed optimism as confident carmakers forecast more growth and unveiled powerful new trucks, sexy sports cars and an abundance of luxury. The newest models, many with more horsepower, more aggressive profiles and ever-swankier cockpits are presented at the show.The auto show is being held annually in Detroit since 1907, except 1943-1952. The show gained its international status in 1988.

Thailand: Mass protests in Bangkok The mass protest started in Thailand in November 2013. Members of the opposition Democrat Party are demanding an immediate resignation of Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra, a sister of the prime-minister Thaksin Shinawatra ousted by royalist generals in 2006. The clashes between protesters and police are still taking place in Bangkok. The government has not tried to stop the protests, despite warnings that they could take a heavy toll on the economy and local businesses if they drag on. The last move made by the protesters was occupation of main streets in central Bangkok in an attempt to "shutdown" the capital, escalating a campaign to unseat the embattled premier and disrupt the February election. Tens or even hundreds of thousands of flag-waving protesters are massed at key intersections in the city, setting up rally stages along with tents for sleeping and stalls offering free food.

First stage of Africa Eco Race-2014 Kazakhstan's Mobile Racing Team crew of Shagirov and Moroz (#206) driving Hammer H3 in T1 class, successfully completed the 87 kilometers of special stage and finished the first stage in the 6th place. Another Kazakhstan's crew of Sazanov and Sakhimov (#208) completed the first stage of the rally in the 13th place, driving Hammer H3 in T1 class as well. The first stage with a total length of 632 kilometers covered the distance from the city of Nador and Boudnib, Morocco and took place on December 31.

Kazakhstan racers start Africa Eco 2014 Sonangol Africa Eco Race 2014 started from St Cyprien on December 29, 2013 and will finish Dakar at the Lac Rose (Rose Lake) in Senegal on January 11, 2014. Kazakhstan is represented by two crews: pilot Kanat Shagirov and navigator Alexandr Moroz, pilot Yuriy Sazanov and navigator Arslan Sakhimov. Both crews successfully passed the technical and administrative checks before of rally raid in St Cyprien, France. The first stage of the race started in the city of Nador, Morocco on December 31. The racers have to successfully drive through 11 stages totaling 2,992 kilometers to complete the challenge.

Kazakhstan vs Canada final hockey match at Universiade Kazakhstan national hockey team won the silver medal of the Winter Universiade in Trentino, Italy, losing the final match to the Canadian hockey team 2:6. Kazakhstan hockey player Yevgeniy Rymarev became the best shooter of the tournament with 14 points. Kazakhstan national team finished the Italian Winter Universiade with the total of 5 medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) and the 15th place by medal count.

EuroMaidan protest in Ukraine A mass rally of thousands protesters led by top opposition leaders including world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko started on November 21, 2013 in Kiev, Ukraine calling for the president to step down after he refused to sign a key political and free trade deal with the European Union at a summit in Vilnius. Waving European Union and opposition party flags, the protesters marched through the center of the city chanting pro-Western and anti-government slogans and stormed the municipal hall, labor unions buildings in Kiev. Some held posters saying "We are not the Soviet Union, we are the European Union" and "I Love EU". The crowd also chanted calls for unseating of President Viktor Yanukovich and release of ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko from jail. Mass protests sparked violent clashes with police, who sprayed tear gas and threw stun grenades. Hundreds of people were injured during the clashes.

Fire at flea market in Almaty Zhana Kulager, Aral and Eurasia sections of the Almaty flea market were on fire on November 17. The fire started during the night, presumably at 3 a.m., but was stopped from spreading only hours later at 11:08 a.m. and completely extinguished by midnight.The total area of the fire made 3800 square meters. Six people were arrested by the police during the fire at the flea market in Almaty. They were caught stealing while everyone was distracted by the fire.

Miss Universe 2013 A 25-year-old Venezuelan television presenter, Gabriela Isler, on Saturday was crowned Miss Universe in Moscow in a glittering ceremony. Last year's winner Olivia Culpo of the United States placed a diamond crown on the head of Isler, who wore a silver rhine-stone studded evening dress. The winner signed an exclusive contract with Miss Universe Organization. Gabriela will be fulfilling the contest's obligations for one year. She will travel around the world and attend charity events. The 1st runner-up title was given to Spanish Patricia Rodriguez, the 2nd runner-up title was given to Constanza Baez from Ecuador and Ariella Arida from the Philippines was awarded with the 3rd runner-up title. Isler's triumph was the seventh Miss Universe win for Venezuela, where beauty pageants are a source of national pride. Previously the crown holders from Venezuela were in 1979, 1981, 1986, 2008, 2009. The Miss Universe beauty pageant was held in Moscow, Russia for the first time ever, its final took place on November 9 at Crocus City Hall. Judges, including rock star Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, picked the winner from a total of 86 contestants at the show watched by millions of viewers around the world.

Gennady Golovkin vs. Curtis Stevens Gennady Golovkin defended his WBA World Middleweight title, once again reminding us of his zero loses and 25 KOs. The unbeaten boxer from Kazakhstan, ended his fight at Madison Square Garden arena in New York with a technical knockout. At the end of the eights round the referee decided to stop the fight due to Stevens’ condition. Recovering from a second round knockdown, Stevens missed too many hits and returned only few counter shots.

Miss Almaty 2013 beauty pageant Aigerim Kozhakhan, 18, from Astana won the Miss Almaty 2013 title. She is studying tourism in the college of Astana-based Gumilyov Eurasian National University. She won the second runner-up title in Astana city and participated in the national contest Miss Kazakhstan in 2012, but failed to enter the Top10 most beautiful girls of Kazakhstan. So, Aigerim decided to take her chance this year and participate in the Miss Almaty 2013 beauty pageant. Yuliya Lukina gained the first runner-up title. The jury decided the girl deserved the title in spite her failure during the evening gowns show: she tripped twice and fell. Aidai Assayeva took the second runner-up title. Madina Davletova received the sponsors' prize. Raushan Yermagambetova won the People's Choice Award based on the online voting results. Assel Spabekova was awarded with the SuperStar title, the jury was impressed by her beautiful vocal. Miss Congeniality was given to Albina Fedorova. The jury included Kazakhstan’s famous figures Sanzhar Bokayev, Sovet Seitov, Amir Akhmetov, Zhamilya Serkebayeva, Alena Rivlina, Andrei Tkachenko, Zhado Sakhieyva, Max Akbarov and Ainur Ryspekova.

Nairobi attack The Somali Islamist group al Shabaab (linked to al Qaeda) committed a terrorist act killing 39 and wounding more than 150 in a shopping mall in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Saturday, September 21. The attack targeted a place frequented by Westerners as well as Kenyans, apparently to achieve maximum global impact. Al Shabaab had repeatedly threatened attacks in Kenya if Nairobi did not pull its troops out of the Horn of Africa.

Stars walk red carpet at Eurasia Film Festival in Almaty The 9th International Film Festival Eurasia was held in Almaty on September 16. The ceremony traditionally started from the red carpet walk of Kazakhstan and foreign stars, participants of the international competition and jury members.

Felt Festival in Almaty The 5th contest called Sheber 2013 (master hand) was held at the Kazakh National Instruments Museum in Almaty. The contest culminated in the Felt Festival Sheber 2013. Kiyz Alma (felt apple). The even lasted for three days (September 6-8, 2013). The festival included an exhibition of various arts, hand-made felt clothes and woodcraft.

16th retro-festival Almaty - My First Love
16th retro-festival Almaty - My First Love was held at the ski-jump complex on September 7. The fest opened with Kazakh national Karazhorga dance than smoothly transitioned to the Gangnam style. The festival’s inspirer Majilis deputy Dariga Nazarbayeva gave the welcoming speech at the festival. She was followed by Almaty Akim (Mayor) Akhmetzhan Yessimov. After the speech the mayor traditionally played a piano piece.

Nazarbayeva said that 1,800 singers, dancers and walk-ons, as well as 1,500 directors and editors were taking part in this year’s festival. The annual music fest was held in the ‘battle’ style. The ‘Music Ring’ saw Aigul Babayeva and Nagima Yeskaliyeva, Roza Rymbayeva and Ali Okapov, Gani Kassymov and Tolkyn Zabirova, Dariga Nazarbayeva and Turetsky Choir, Dilnaz Akhmadiyeva and Marsel, Kadyrali Bolmanov and The Jigits, Assel Sadvakassova and Anel Arinova, Dos-Mukasan and Ayumi, Kirill Li and Dilani faced each other.

Sandra and Natalie, as well as Army of Lovers and E-type were the headliners of the concert. The program also included dozens of performances by dancers, circus and ballet artists. Laser and projection shows were part of the festival for the first time.

The festival was hosted by Nagima Yeskaliyeva and Sagnai Abdullin followed by Makpal Issabekova and Aleksey Shakhmatov.
