The preliminary estimation of damages caused by the natural disaster in Zhambyl oblast stands at over 2.6 billion tenge ($17.2 million), KazTAG reports citing the press-service of Zhambyl oblast administration. "The oblast commission continues calculation of the damages caused by the storm to Zhambyl oblast. According to the preliminary information, the damage is at over 2.6 billion tenge," the press-service states. "The storm has caused many problems, especially in Talas and Saryssu regions. The calculations are still incomplete. The final statement will be made later," head of Zhambyl oblast administration's press-service Askar Dzhaldinov said. The storm caused a blackout in Zhambyl, Talas and Saryssu regions of Zhambyl oblast on January 12. Over 1.5 thousand apartments were left without natural gas in Karatau. The blackout caused suspension of the central boiler house of Karatau at 07:15 a.m. An hour later its 60m-long concrete chimney collapsed into the area of the 5th (reserve) and 6th (main) water-heating boilers, leaving the residents without heating and water. A rescue team of the State Rescue Service was dispatched to the accident site on cross-country vehicles, as well as a Civil Defense regiment and several crews from other state authorities. All available special vehicles were mobilized. Kazakhstan Emergency Situations Ministry's aviation is still on high alert. Emergency elimination headquarters were set up upon instruction of Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev. They are headed by deputy Prime-Minister Krymbek Kusherbayev. The local commission on elimination of the emergency situation is headed by Akim (Governor) of Zhambyl oblast Kanat Bozumbayev.
