Tengrinews.kz - Fourteen people were killed and at least 30 injured after a concrete canopy collapsed over the entrance to the railway station in the city of Novi Sad, Serbia, according to Euronews.
Emergency vehicles and rescue teams were dispatched to the central station, with approximately 80 personnel working at the scene. The tragedy occurred on November 1, and November 2 was declared a national day of mourning.
The station building in Serbia's second-largest city had recently been renovated and reopened in June this year. However, Serbia’s railway company, Zeleznice Srbije, clarified that the structure above the entrance was not part of the major renovation. Serbian experts suggested that the renovation work might have caused structural shifts, which could have indirectly led to the roof's collapse.
Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic called it "one of the darkest days in Novi Sad’s post-war history" and promised a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
Previously, a train carrying thousands of gallons of fuel collided with a herd of wild elephants in Sri Lanka and derailed, killing several animals.
