In the Balearic Islands, there has been a significant drop in the number of British travelers due to local protests against mass tourism. As a result, regional tourism agencies have launched a large-scale campaign to attract tourists.
"Communications have therefore been sent to the media as well as to tour operators and travel agencies. These are intended to convey messages of reassurance that tourists are most certainly welcome on the islands and shouldn't fear a hostile reception or displays of 'tourismphobia'," the publication writes.
At the same time, it is noted that residents of Majorca, one of the Balearic Islands, have taken to the streets with signs urging tourists to "go home" and have blocked access to popular beaches.
The publication specifies that the demonstrations were primarily aimed at tightening controls on tourist rentals in order to improve the living conditions of local residents, but things took a darker turn when "kill the tourist" graffiti appeared on several walls in the town of Manacor.
