Tengrinews.kz – The power supply to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which had been disrupted after a Russian strike on energy infrastructure in Slavutych, Kyiv region, has been fully restored, according to Deutsche Welle.
The report cites information from Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy.
According to Minister Svitlana Grynchuk, radiation levels at the facility remain within safety limits, and there is no threat to the population.
The sarcophagus over the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) was left without power following the October 1 strike by Russian forces on Slavutych’s energy infrastructure. Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy stated that this caused an emergency situation at the site.
The ministry explained that due to voltage surges, the New Safe Confinement — the key structure that isolates the destroyed fourth reactor and prevents radioactive material from escaping into the environment — was left without electricity.
Later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the blackout at Chernobyl lasted more than three hours.
According to Slavutych Mayor Yurii Fomichev, Russian forces struck a power substation in the evening of October 1, causing a fire at the plant. Kyiv regional authorities specified that the attack was carried out by a drone. The city was left without electricity, and by Wednesday evening, around 20,000 residents were without power, with water supply operating on a schedule.
Several settlements in Chernihiv region were also left without electricity, where scheduled blackouts were introduced.
Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, called Russia’s strikes on energy infrastructure a “threat not only to Ukraine, but to European security as a whole.” These actions will not go unanswered, he emphasized.
