Tengrinews.kz - The city of Pompeii is set to limit the number of visitors allowed to access its world-famous site. Starting November 15, a maximum of 20,000 people per day will be permitted entry due to concerns over "overtourism," according to Sky News.

According to the news outlet, the archaeological park plans to introduce the limit soon, along with personalized tickets that include visitors' full names.

On a recent Sunday with free admission, the park recorded over 36,000 visitors in a single day, marking an all-time high.

The park’s director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, stated that current daily attendance averages between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors. The new restriction aims to prevent numbers from rising further. Entrance to Italian museums is free on the first Sunday of each month; otherwise, tickets start from 18 euros (about 9,500 tenge).

In 2023, Pompeii saw over four million visitors, a 33.6 percent increase compared to 2022.

The UNESCO World Heritage site was once a thriving Roman city that was remarkably preserved under layers of volcanic ash, rocks, and dust following Mount Vesuvius’s eruption in AD 79.

Earlier, tens of thousands of people across the Canary Islands took to the streets to protest against over-tourism and its consequences.
