Tengrinews.kz - The European Union is planning to introduce its 16th package of sanctions against Russia in February 2024, coinciding with the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to "Voice of America."
Preparations for the new measures have already begun, according to the German weekly Welt am Sonntag, which cited diplomatic sources in Brussels on December 22. European diplomats emphasized that the sanctions aim to "send a clear signal to Moscow."
The package reportedly includes punitive measures targeting specific sectors of the Russian economy that have either not been previously addressed or were only partially affected, according to Deutsche Welle.
In addition, the European Commission and the European External Action Service are said to be considering entry bans and asset freezes for individuals involved in espionage for Russia or disinformation campaigns.
"However, it has not yet been decided whether these restrictions will be included in the new package, as it is reportedly difficult to track and prove involvement in so-called hybrid attacks," the report noted.
Previously, the EU has approved 15 sanctions packages against Russia, with the most recent one announced on December 16. That package targeted 54 individuals and 32 entities, including those from China, India, Iran, Serbia, and the UAE, whom the EU accuses of helping Moscow circumvent restrictions.
On the same day, the European Council also expanded sanctions against Belarus due to the country's internal situation.
