Tengrinews.kz – As a result of a Russian strike on an energy facility in Slavutych, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was left without electricity, according to RBC-Ukraine.
The report cites information published on the Telegram channel of Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy.
The ministry stated that the shelling of energy infrastructure in Slavutych, located in the Kyiv region, led to an emergency situation at the facilities of the State Specialized Enterprise Chernobyl NPP.
“Due to power surges, the New Safe Confinement was left without electricity. This is the key structure that isolates the destroyed fourth reactor of the Chernobyl NPP and prevents the release of radioactive materials into the environment,” the statement reads.
It is noted that specialists are currently working to restore the power supply.
The accident at Chernobyl’s fourth reactor occurred on April 26, 1986. In Ukraine, 50,000 square kilometers across 12 regions were contaminated. Areas in Belarus and Russia were also affected by radioactive fallout.
