Tengrinews.kz – Starting January 1, 2026, entry into Georgia will only be permitted with valid medical insurance. The new rule applies to all foreign nationals, including citizens of Kazakhstan, citing Lada.kz.
According to amendments to Georgia’s Law “On Tourism,” “foreign citizens are required to have a medical insurance policy valid for the entire period of their stay in the country.” Compliance will be checked at all border crossings.
What the insurance must cover
Under the updated requirements, the policy must include:
- emergency outpatient care — at least USD 5,000;
- inpatient treatment — at least USD 30,000;
- coverage for accidents, injuries and sudden illnesses;
- medical evacuation and repatriation.
The changes are attributed to a rise in tourist inflows and an increase in accidents in the mountains.
Fines for noncompliance
A fine of 300 lari will be imposed for attempting to enter without insurance. Penalties increase for engaging in active recreation without proper coverage:
- 500–1,000 lari — for activities such as mountaineering, skiing, trekking and other extreme sports;
- 1,000–2,000 lari — for repeated violations;
overdue fines may double or triple.
Repeated noncompliance may lead to refusal of entry or even deportation. Tour operators are now required to inform clients in advance about the new rules.
It is also noted that since October 1, Georgia has enforced tougher penalties and a simplified deportation procedure for foreigners who overstay their permitted period in the country.
