Tengrinews.kz - Kazakh students currently in Europe have found themselves in the midst of severe flooding, according to 24KZ.
Darina Zhumagul, head of the non-profit organization Qazaq Nomad and currently residing in Prague, described the situation as critical. Many train routes were blocked due to fallen trees, making it difficult for international students to travel from Prague to cities like Ostrava. However, she noted that the situation has since stabilized.
"A student from Ostrava, who has been studying in the Czech Republic for two years, reached out to me, asking if she could stay with me because she received a notification that train routes might be blocked," Zhumagul said.
She added that the situation is normalizing, with timely updates from the media informing people about closed roads and travel advisories. Many volunteers have been involved in strengthening buildings and filling sandbags.
In Central Europe, severe flooding over the past week has resulted in 24 fatalities and caused significant damage to infrastructure. The Polish government has declared a 30-day state of emergency as the country faces the worst flooding in 27 years. Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the situation in southwestern Poland as "dramatic."
According to Euronews, soldiers in northeastern Czechia have joined firefighters and rescue workers in recovery efforts, with military helicopters distributing humanitarian aid and soldiers constructing temporary bridges where others have been washed away. Up to 400 people have been evacuated from their homes in the regional capital of Ostrava.
In Austria, where flooding has washed out roads and caused landslides, cleanup efforts are underway. Firefighters and soldiers are pumping water and mud from homes.
Additionally, heavy rainfall has led to flooding and the evacuation of 1,000 people in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy.
