According to the Daily Mail, the incident occurred on Sunday around midday in the Prekmurje region in the north-east of the country. The Cessna 172 Skyhawk, belonging to Maribor Aeroclub, crashed near a local football pitch. Police and emergency services immediately arrived at the scene.
As the police in Murska Sobota said, the plane was making a panoramic flight from Maribor to Lendava, but the route passed through thick fog, which was probably one of the reasons for the tragedy. It is known that the aircraft was designed for four people, but one of the passengers decided to stay on the ground.

There were three people on board: a man in his 30s from the Beltinci region and a woman from the Styria region, both of whom died. The name of the third victim has not yet been released. Local media reported that the flight was organized as a surprise for the birthday of one of the passengers.
The weather was clear at the time of takeoff at 11 a.m. in Maribor, but thick fog was observed closer to the destination, in the Lendava area. Photos from the accident site show severe weather conditions, which supports the theory that the weather played a role in the incident.
Maribor Aviation Centre representative Vili Kolar confirmed that the plane belonged to their club.
"We saw in the flight plan that the plane took off from us at 11 a.m. We were informed about the news by others, but air traffic control could not tell us because the plane was outside the control area of Maribor," he said.
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk, which was involved in the accident, is one of the most popular aircraft in the world. This American model, which first took to the air in 1955, has long established itself as a reliable aircraft, especially for training pilots.
The investigation into the causes of the accident is ongoing. Police and experts are trying to establish what exactly caused the crash - weather conditions, technical problems, or pilot error.
