Tengrinews.kz — A mass fish die-off has occurred in Lake Saryaidyn in the Zhangala District of West Kazakhstan Region. Specialists have named a preliminary cause of the deaths, according to Moi Gorod.
What happened
A local resident posted a video on social media showing the lake’s surface literally covered with thousands of dead fish. The author of the video said the footage was filmed on March 19 in the village of Zhanakazan.
Comment from the akimat
According to the West Kazakhstan Region akimat, it has been preliminarily established that the dead fish were mainly crucian carp — young fish about one year old. The total volume of dead fish is still being determined.
Specialists believe that the die-off may have been caused by a lack of oxygen in the water where the fish had gathered.
At present, according to the akimat, emergency and specialized services are working at the scene. Work is underway to collect and dispose of the dead fish, as well as to inspect the area and take samples for laboratory testing.
Representatives of local executive bodies, emergency services, sanitary services, environmental organizations, and specialized inspections are involved in eliminating the consequences.
