Cyanides in the Sekissovka River in East Kazakhstan could be deadly for local fauna and residents, ecologist Mels Yeleussizov told Tengrinews.kz. According to him, high concentration of the poisonous substance, potassium cyanide, may cause human deaths. Cyanides pose the most danger during the first few days after they leak. If the poison penetrates a human body within the first 2-3 days after they are discharged into the water, they will cause an inevitable death. However, after several days cyanides become less dangerous, as they dissolve in water. Yeleussizov said that he had had an experience of such ecological accidents in his practice. He was at the gold mine in Kyrgyzstan during a similar accident. Meltdown of one of the collectors caused a discharge of cyanides into the Kultar River and further into Issyk-Kul lake. “I was there. I studies cyanides and took samples of the water. These substances are hazardous at the initial stage. That's why water samples are required in the first day of the accident and a few days after. It is possible that the river contains other hazardous substances, too,” Yeleussizov said. East Kazakhstan Emergency Situations Department confirmed that the situation with wastes in Sekissovka village is posing a threat for people and local water reservoirs where the river flows in. Meanwhile, the rescuers are calling the residents not to panic, saying that the situation is under control. “Two additional wastes pumps have beeb set up in the village. Besides, a supposed sourse of the leak of cyanides has been found,” the press-service of the Emergency Situations Department explained. Concentration of cyanides in the river is 516 times higher than the maximum permissible level. According to Kazakhstan Ministry of Emergency Situation, the flow in the leak from the tailing dump has been halved. Earlier Tengrinews.kz English reported that October 29 water intake area was polluted after an emergency dumping of toxic wastes from a gold plant in Sekissovka village of East Kazakhstan Oblast.
