Tengrinews.kz – Astronomers predict that the chances of asteroid 2024 YR colliding directly with Earth are 2.3 percent, according to "Gazeta.Ru."

Tengrinews.kz – Astronomers predict that the chances of asteroid 2024 YR colliding directly with Earth are 2.3 percent, according to "Gazeta.Ru."

According to data from NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, asteroid 2024 YR will pass close to Earth in 2032. The probability of a direct impact with the celestial object is estimated at 2.3 percent.

Professor of planetary astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, Colin Snodgrass, stated that the asteroid’s flyby is most likely to be harmless.

Asteroid 2024 YR is about the size of a football field. Scientists first discovered it on December 27, 2024, at the El Sauce Observatory in Chile. Astronomers estimate its diameter to be between 40 and 90 meters. By New Year's, NASA had already classified it as an object requiring special attention.
